How To Give Constructive Criticism
Giving criticism is so freakin' vulnerable.
The anticipation of having the conversation can bring up questions like:
What if I lose this person because of what I am about to say?
What if they find me threatening and shut down?
What if they lose their temper and this turns into an argument?
What am I even trying to say?
How can I say this nicely?
Constructive criticism is truly an art.
This article applies not only to those of us who have a hard time with confrontation but to anyone who's ever had to tell it like it is.
Whether it’s a performance evaluation at work, a difficult conversation with your partner about splitting tasks at home, or teaching your son how to cook- the approach is EVERYTHING.
At first, this may feel awkward, rehearsed and inauthentic. With practice, it’ll be the greatest tool you will have ever learned. The fear and anxiety leading up to these challenging conversations will dissipate.
